BRIGHT BOOKS | Journals + Solar Lights = Huge Impact

written by JILL March 29, 2017

When we first heard about Bright Books we instantly fell in love with their mission, product, and story!  Watch the video below with the founder of Bright Books Amy O’Shea to see a little glimpse into this awesome brand.

Bringing brightness to families and children in need, BRIGHT BOOKS Journals are high quality and each pair purchased gives solar lights to families in need.

The story of Bright Books started way back in 2009 with a trip to Uganda. While exploring rural Uganda Amy quickly realized that electricity was rare and tenuous which made it hard to do anything after dark. Children were unable to study because of a lack of light, families couldn’t afford to keep their homes lit with kerosene or candles and some of the villages were too remote to have access to power.

This problem stuck with Amy and she started educating herself in the energy sector. She learned of a growing movement to supply energy access to people in the developing world. The cost and time it would take to supply all these villages with traditional power grids, however, makes it unrealistic to think that many of these villages will get the energy they need for quite some time. That’s when she thought of Bright Books!

SOLAR LIGHTING

Over 1.2 billion people lack access to power, these people use kerosene lamps, candles or batteries to help make up for the lack of electricity. These power options are certainly not sustainable and they are very expensive. Kerosene is also quite dangerous and emits toxic fumes. Enter Nokero. Nokero has a huge vision which is to replace kerosene lamps and candles with solar lights. These solar lights are completely portable and after charging in the daylight can provide hours of quality bright light. But not only that one Nokero solar light can increase study time by over 50% and can last up to 15 hours after just a day’s charge. They are built strong and fully waterproof meant to survive tough conditions. Check out the light here!

JOURNALS

There are three different colors to choose from: baby pink, medium dark grey and bold royal blue.

For every pair of journals purchased, Bright Books donates one solar light to those in need. This doesn’t mean you have to buy two journals to make a difference, it just means that whether it’s your journal purchased, or someone else across the world buying another, every two journals purchased provides one solar light.

The journals are hard covered, 128 lined pages, wrapped with a unique stylish ribbon to keep it snug and tight and on every corner of the page there is a tiny image so when you flip through the whole book you get a little-animated story. The back cover has artwork that reflects the people your purchase is helping to provide light for. These journals are high quality and made with love.

SUSTAINABLY SOURCED AND CERTIFIED

Every journal is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified and manufactured in an ICTI Care certified facility.

The FSC is an organization that was found in 1993 due to concerns about deforestation and works to promote the practice of sustainable forestry worldwide. FSC certified means that the product has been sourced in an environmentally-friendly and socially responsible manner. There is a very informative article about FSC certification on the Mother Nature Network | What is FSC Certified?

ICTI Care is an ethical supply chain program for the global toy industry and its goal is to improve working conditions in factories worldwide. They work to establish a safe working environment and establish standards for factories. So far over 1000 sites have been certified.

IMPACT

Bright Books is working with non-profits to give light to children and families in school and refugee camps in developing areas worldwide. It is estimated that over 1.3 billion people lack access to basic electricity. These solar lights from Nokercould help provide energy to countless people!
