SAYA DESIGNS | Handcrafted Hairpins from Bali

written by JILL August 15, 2017

Inspired by artisans from Bali, Saya Designs has recently launched a nature fueled project featuring a carefully crafted line of hairpins. Saya Designs was created to be more than just a line of products, but also a platform for telling stories, evoking a passionate response and creating positive change. The ethical hairpins are made using old root wood which is saved from old plantations, which makes them environmentally friendly and are passionate about conserving rainforests and nature through its projects.

THE HAIRPINS

Hairpins have been used since early human history and Saya Designs is bringing them back with a reverence for that history and design but also a new element for a modern look and feel. Every piece has been carefully selected and made using recycled root wood from old plantations in Indonesia. These roots take a long time to decompose so recycling these materials is much better for the environment than using new wood. Once sourced each project is skillfully hand-crafted to create a beautiful hairpin piece.

The pin I’m featuring is their TARO hairpin. Its design is a single U shaped dark, reddish rosewood with a golden taro strip down the middle. I thought I would struggle using this pin because my hair is so short, but it was super easy to slide it in and it held my hair in a full (mini) bun and half (mini) bun.  They have 11 different styles to choose from and you can shop them HERE.

SUPPORT POSITIVE CHANGE

If you buy a hairpin you help purchase and plant up to 10 endangered trees in rainforests in Indonesia. How awesome is it to buy a  traditional and practical product and give back to mother nature. Saya Designs is also partnered with GAIA which is an organization that teaches local communities how to take care of the environment. You can read all about their ETHOS, watch TUTORIALS on different ways to use the pins and read their inspiring STORY on their new website.
