VITAL PROTEINS: Alternative Protein Sources

written by JILL November 5, 2016

My mom’s first response when I said I was taking collagen protein was “wait, what… you’re too young to need collagen!” That was similar to my first thoughts because in my mind collagen was for aging women and men, not young (ish) chicks like myself. However my mind certainly has changed since reading up and enjoying the benefits of Vital Proteins. Alternative protein sources are gaining popularity and I feel Vital Proteins could certainly be one of those brands set to gain mainstream attraction.

I pulled a bit of info from their website to provide some insight into what exactly collagen is and how it’s helpful for our bodies (and not just for “aging” women).

“Collagen is an important building block for the skin.  It makes up to 30% of the protein of the living body and 70% of the protein that makes up skin.  Collagen ensures the cohesion, elasticity and regeneration of skin.  Skin tissue is composed of various molecules, some of which are amino acids, and these amino acids are essential for maintaining an even skin structure and thus healthy skin.  The dermis, which provides the foundation for the skin, is closely involved in the skin’s elasticity and flexibility.  Collagen is the main component of the dermis.  Maintaining the amount of collagen is the key to beautiful skin.  Glycine, proline, alanine and hydroxyproline are the main constituents of collagen; replenishing these constituent amino acids appears to be needed to maintain the amount of collagen at healthy levels

A growing body of research is showing nutraceuticals can contribute to healthy skin.  While topical creams and cosmetic products can affect skin condition from outside, nutritional supplements taken orally can have an impact from within the skin.  Clinical research has shown that Vital Proteins’ Collagen, a natural protein:

  • Promotes younger looking skin;
  • Improves skin moisture level;
  • Improves skin smoothness by reducing the number of micro-relief furrows;
  • Improves the signs of deep wrinkles
  • Improves skin suppleness.”

Now I have dry skin, which has been a problem of mine for my entire life. One thing that I love about this product is that it will (from the inside out) help improve my skin and moisture level, something that I’m always in desperate need of. And in addition to my dry skin, my nails and hair are not the thickest/healthiest they can be. Vital Proteins will help strengthen and improve my nails and hair as well (something as a blondie I NEED). I always use homemade lotions and the most natural products I can get, but one thing my dad always taught me was the way to make the best effect on my body is to improve it from the inside out, which is what Vital Proteins is all about.

Now another thing I love about this product is that not only is it completely natural nutrition, but they care about the environment and use the highest quality sustainably sourced protein for their products.

The two products I’ve been trying are the Marine Collagen and the Collagen Beauty Greens.

The Marine Collagen is what I’ve been using the most as I really know that fish protein is amazing for my skin, and also it’s flavorless and can be added to both hot and cold liquids so it’s what I throw in my coffee, and morning tea everyday!

The Collagen Beauty Greens is also amazing because it is full of organic raw greens, hyaluronic acid and probiotics. This stuff is amazing for you skin, nails, hair, and just overall health. It also is in my favorite flavor, Coconut Vanilla so it gives my drinks an extra kick of flavor that I love. I use this in my cold drinks, particularly in my smoothies.

Here’s a quick visual recipe for my go-to smoothie. I use frozen fruit (except the banana) so I don’t need any ice to mix in!

If you’re not sure about adding collagen protein to your diet or just want to read up more about the benefits and usage of Vital Proteins, go check them out on Instagram and read up more on their website (link below.) I’m sure if you love natural, completely healthy and sustainable products, then you won’t be disappointed!
