ORIGIN STORY | Members of the Fair Trade Federation
The story of Mayamam Weavers began in 2008 in a small little Mayan village in the western highlands of Guatemala. A group of women in the village of Cajola faced a similar problem of poverty and together they explored different ways that they could provide jobs for their community and a way out of their issue. The option for them was either migrate to the US and deal with loss of family and separation or figure out a solution, they chose the latter. They created a cooperative and decided to run the businesses together.
Mayamam Weavers works closely with these women ensuring they have the proper skill training and tools for their trade. Workshops, English classes and adult learning program are held to help all the women reach the level of education they desire. Some have even gone on to receive scholarships to study at a university level.
Over 11 years since the humble beginnings, the cooperative of women has grown to 20 weavers and seamstresses who all earn a wage that is fair trade standard. Mayamam Weavers are proud members of the Fair Trade Federation and their mission is to offer products that truly make a difference in the lives of these women and their children.

The Navy & Khaki Herringbone bag is handwoven, easy to pack and ideal as a traveling toiletry bag. I was in desperate need of a new toiletry bag and am really happy with the size and look of this one, it will be my go-to for all future trips. I love that it helps to provide a fair wage for the artisans as well. We went on a trip recently to Devon, UK and it came along with me and did a great job!
Stylish, practical and the perfect tote to add to your zero waste quest to avoid plastic bags. The Market tote is handwoven by traditional weaving with careful detail and has been designed with 2 straps to make it easy to use and grab on the go. It comes in two different color ways which gives you some variety, fits quite a lot and is very durable. I took it out the other day with me to our cute little village square and picked up some season flowers to take home in it – the tote did well!
