Jill and I had a blast at SXSW but before I jump into our experience in Austin, first I want to give you a quick overview of who Icebreaker is that we partnered with on this event because they’re a pretty incredible company!

Icebreaker is a merino wool natural performance outdoor sustainable clothing brand from New Zealand. Their purpose is to offer a natural alternative to synthetics and be a leader in terms of sustainability for the outdoor industry. Icebreaker’s pieces are for the whole family and offer simplicity, longevity, and versatility with clothes that transcend single use, are high quality and are styled in a timeless way that will last from season to season.

Icebreaker was one of the first companies in the world to develop a deep relationship with merino growers. You can even explore their merino wool stations on their website and see where they source the merino wool from and when the last audit was performed on a certain grower. 100% of the contracted Icebreaker Merino Stations have been audited in the last three years. Audits include on-site visits, discussions and full access to farm stock, facilities, and records. Random shearing audits also take place to ensure the sheep are being treated properly. Check it out HERE

All Icebreaker growers are committed to a strict animal welfare code that even extends to the sheepdogs that work at the stations.  You can be sure that the sheep felt just as good making your Icebreaker merino as you do wearing it! Check out these four guarantees that Icebreaker promises from their growers.

  1. Never Hungry or Thirsty – Sheep always have access to clean water and food
  2. Free to Roam – Sheep are free to wander in open pastures with minimal human interference.
  3. Out of Harm’s Way – Growers regularly make sure their sheep are pain-free and free from disease and illness.
  4. Stree Free – Growers are required to handle sheep in a humane way that avoids unnecessary stress and pain.

There is way too much good stuff about Icebreaker to mention in a single blog post. If you want to read a little bit more about their supply chain check it out HERE or stay tuned for future blog posts highlighting some more key elements of Icebreaker New Zealand.

For the past 22 years, Icebreaker NZ has been committed to building an ethical and sustainable business. In 2017 they released their first ‘Transparency Report’ which basically is an in-depth full look at their brand, their supply chain and how their products are made. Their ‘Transparency Report’ is truly incredible and I believe one day will be an industry standard that other brands will have to keep up with and model themselves after. This report is incredibly transparent and opens up the doors of Icebreaker allowing you to peek inside and see what they are all about.

Jill and I were privileged to be invited to SXSW in partnership with Icebreaker NZ. We spent two full days at the event in Austin, Texas and loved every minute of it! Check out the video vlog at the end for a glimpse into our adventures during our time there.

South by Southwest is for all those creative people out there looking towards what’s next in society and technology. It is an annual event that has a mix of the tech, film and music industries. The event features exhibitions, film screenings, concerts and sessions with celebrities and experts such as Olivia Wilde, Elizabeth Banks, Gwyneth Paltrow, the Instagram Founders, Airbnb founder, the NASA media team and much much more. SXSW is truly a melting pot of different spheres of influence and features a lot of diverse topics and peoples.

We both went to sessions that were very inspiring at the conference. Some of the speakers Jill loved and heard from were Gwyneth Paltrow on her business Goop, Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom the founders of Instagram, representatives from NASA and Zoe Saldana about her business BESE. Although I enjoyed the sessions my favorite part of SXSW was the trade show which Icebreaker had a booth at. The trade show featured inspiring brands, innovative technology, and fascinating startups. Jill and I discovered 3D-printed sushi, a robot coffee bar, robot pets and an interactive coding game featuring toy guns. Around every corner, there was something interesting, truly neat to see some cutting edge ideas and companies that I’m sure I will be seeing more of in the future.

At the Icebreaker booth in the SXSW trade show, they were featuring their  Icebreaker’s Cool-Lite™ T-shirts for men and women and had exclusive, custom screen printing at their booth. Both Jill and I were able to get a screen printed t-shirt while we were there that we both really enjoy wearing.

Icebreaker’s Cool-Lite™ collection combines two natural performance fibers: merino wool and TENCEL®. These two fibers will keep you cool and fresh coming into the hot weather seasons. Cool-Lite™ has enhanced durability, is breathable, light and soft, and is odor-resistant, the perfect base layer.

All in all it was a really great trip. We learned a lot about Icebreaker and their merino wool process, learned lots from all of the conference sessions we attended enjoyed some great music and comedy and really enjoyed exploring the city on some electric scooters and bikes. Austin is a great city!!
